Beaded Trim

I decided to jazz up a red blouse with a beaded trim and there was no time to go and buy some. I improvised by painting some lace red with acrylic paint. Once dry I washed the lace to check that the paint did not wash out- acrylic paint is usually quite colour fast. I then stitched to the blouse and beaded in the spaces. It was so easy and relaxing to do.

A Steampunk Bird Workshop

Teaching a bird workshop recently at Fantasia Textiles with some amazing results. Although some parts were fiddly to machine the students managed to produce a flock of birds by the end of the day. Now they just need lots of hand stitching and some metal embellishments.

Memories of Nanny G

Memories

Both my grandmothers gave me my first experiences of needlework and taught me to Knit, Crochet and Stitch. Nanny G was a dressmaker who made all her own clothes. She had a new-fangled Singer machine, but she preferred to stitch every seam by hand! She must have had only one dress pattern, a pinafore with patch pockets for hankies. She made this in every fabric available.

By contrast Nanny P was a bit of a rebel and was able to make something from nothing. Today she would have been at the forefront of the upcycling, re purposing community. We spent many days hunting out treasures in junk shops and at jumble sales. With her I cut buttons off shirts and unravelled jumpers. I still love to give something a new lease of life and search for treasures wherever I go.
